Planning for Growth in a Regional Centre

Shepparton Water Model Build, Calibration and Masterplanning

UWS built and calibrated the hydraulic model of the Shepparton water supply network for Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) and utilised the water model to develop a 20-year master plan.

The city of Shepparton is a major agricultural and manufacturing centre in regional Victoria. The water network includes the township of Mooroopna to the west and supplies several large industrial customers including SPC Australia and Campbells Soup. Shepparton and Mooroopna are predicted to grow significantly in the next 20 years.

UWS developed an extensive field monitoring plan consisting of 47 flow, 41 pressure and 11 level sensors at permanent and temporary monitoring locations throughout the network. Detection Services were engaged to conduct the 2-week field test for the system. UWS assessed the field data downloaded throughout the monitoring period to ensure that sufficient quantity and quality of data was captured to calibrate the model. Data anomalies were identified early, investigated, and resolved.

A 20-year water network masterplan was developed using the calibrated model. UWS worked collaboratively with GVW, consulting widely with the executive management, legal and property, planning, climate resilience, customer service, asset management and operations teams within GVW to develop a set of preferred upgrade solutions which improved the operability of the system.
